Your Water and the River
Above The Greenscapes: Water for People campaign asks, if we need water for so many important things, why do we waste so much of it on grass?
Peabody’s drinking water comes from two surface sources, both of which are fed by the Ipswich River. The city pumps water from the Ipswich River into Winoa Pond and Suntaug Lake from December 1-May 31 when flows are above 44 cubic feet per second at the South Middleton streamflow gage. The city previously had two wells in the Ipswich River's watershed (Pine Street and Johnson Street Wells), but they have been closed for several decades due to contamination.
Despite recent rains our region is in a severe drought. How does it compare to the historic drought of 2016 and what’s being done to address what could be the new normal for New England summers?
