Exploring the River, Leg by Leg

Paddle-a-thon committee member Dick Fates enjoys exploring the river for this year’s Paddle-a-thon, solo and with son Matt Fates (on his stand-up paddleboard).

With the Paddle-a-thon on virtual this year, I decided to paddle as much of the river as I could. After investigating the Lobs Pound Mill put in and talking to more experienced paddlers about the obstructions east of the Ipswich River Park, I decided to begin my voyage at Boston Street, just east of the Middleton Dam.

Leg 1 – Boston Street to Thunder Bridge. 8.4 miles according to the Paddling Guide and Map. Short video attached

Leg 2 – Thunder Bridge to Route 97. 3.8 miles

Leg 3 –  Route 97 to Winthrop Street. 6.7 Miles

Leg 4 –  Winthrop Street to Peatfield Street. 4.2 miles

Leg 5 –  County Road Park to Pavillion Beach. Approximately 2.5 miles. Longer video of departure attached. Needs to be shortened

I was able to stay in my kayak for all of leg 1. I had to get out 3 times on leg 2. My son joined me on this leg on his paddleboard. Leg 3 was the most interesting, paddling through the Wildlife Preserve passed Audubon. Hundreds of birds and even a beaver. Leg 4 presented some problems just east of the Mill Road bridge but I was able to get through without getting out of my Kayak. Leg 5 was serene. A beautiful day, a calm river and the tide with me made for a quick trip. I have been on the river with Foote Bros. and children, usually leaving from Salen Street to their dam. For the last 5 years, I have been on the volunteer team on the day of the Paddle-a-thon and unable to paddle. But this year during these legs I had nothing to do but enjoy the scenery, the wildlife and the peaceful nature of the river. I am determined to repeat certain legs next spring when the water is high enough to do more of the upstream sections. A wonderful journey.
