Kristen Thiebault has shared her expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a volunteer with us since 2017. Her skills have had a significant impact on how we use and share information for projects and programs through maps. Kristen has spent many hours at the computer, combining and adjusting layers of data in a way that conveys complex information about the river, land and the work being done such as water quality, water quantity and restoration.
Much of her work is featured on our website, including an interactive map of all the water quality monitoring taking place in the Parker, Ipswich and Essex Rivers (PIE-Rivers) watersheds. This map was featured prominently at the PIE-Rivers annual meeting in December. She also made an animated time series map of how dissolved oxygen levels change each summer. Other accomplishments include mapping dams and barriers to fish migration, combining water quality monitoring data with land use and other features, mapping town features and water supplies for education programs, a soon to be released story map of the Ipswich River Watershed Association and many more!
GIS can be very challenging, and time consuming but Kristen is skillful at navigating the computer program and creating detailed maps that highlight specific information to tell a clear story of what is happening. We are very grateful to be able to work with Kristen and her accomplishments have made a real difference for the River!
