Hello everyone,
My name is Annabelle Platt and I’m excited to be the 2019 Summer Education Apprentice here at the Ipswich River Watershed Association. My role here is mainly to educate groups, particularly children, about the river and take them for paddles at our beautiful headquarters. I’ll also be attending nearby farmer’s markets and other events to talk to people about IRWA.
I am a recent graduate of Ipswich High School and a five-year veteran of their FIRST robotics team. In the fall, I plan to attend Olin College of Engineering in Needham, MA, where I will most likely major in robotics engineering.
Although my role at IRWA may seem completely unrelated to my major, I am interested in the field of environmental engineering. As I’ve had many opportunities to learn about engineering in high school, I wanted to learn more about the environmental side. I’ve been interested in protecting wildlife and its habitats ever since I got a Ranger Rick magazine subscription at the age of 5. When I was 13, I was deeply inspired when I saw Sylvia Earle speak about preserving the oceans. Since then, I’ve also gone on canoeing and backpacking trips and have seen some of the beauty of nature for myself. So I’m very excited to be working to protect the Ipswich River this summer.
